Round Rock is the one city we work in where the ground genuinely changes from one side of town to the other. A UT-Austin bedrock study puts it plainly: the city is bisected by the Balcones Fault Zone and sits astride the break between the Grand and Black prairies. West of I-35 you are on karst limestone with almost no topsoil. East of I-35 you are on deep Blackland clay. Same city, two completely different pours.

The Ground Under Round Rock
What Concrete Has to Deal With in Round Rock
There is no single answer to what is under a Round Rock driveway. The Balcones Fault Zone runs straight through the city, and it separates two subgrades that fail in opposite ways.
West of I-35, in Behrens Ranch, Sendero Springs and Vista Oaks, the terrain is hilly and karst-like with very little topsoil over limestone. The problem there is excavation and uneven bearing: a pad that sits half on intact rock and half on backfill will crack along that seam no matter how good the concrete is.
East of I-35, toward Chandler Creek, Paloma Lake and Teravista, you are on Blackland Prairie clay. That soil holds 40 to 60 percent clay, runs deeper than 80 inches with no rock to found on, and opens cracks half an inch to four inches wide that stay open 90 to 150 days a year. It moves every season, and anything poured on it without a plan moves with it.
So the first thing we do on a Round Rock estimate is work out which side of that line your address falls on. It changes the base depth, the joint spacing and the reinforcement.
Under Your Property
What the Stone Under Round Rock Is Doing to Your Concrete
Dig on the west side of Round Rock and you hit Lower Cretaceous limestone, dolomitic limestone, marl and chert, often within a foot. Dig on the east side and you can go past eighty inches without touching rock at all, because the Upper Cretaceous shale, marl and chalk down there is buried under deep Blackland clay. The Balcones Fault Zone runs between them.
We work out which of these you have before we price anything, because the excavation, the base depth and the reinforcement all change with it. A quote built on the wrong assumption about the ground is where the money gets lost on a concrete job.

The problem here
Round Rock driveways crack for two different reasons depending on postcode. On the west side it is differential bearing where the pad crosses a rock cut. On the east side it is seasonal clay movement under an under-built base.
How we build for it
We identify the subgrade first. On rock we overexcavate the high side so the whole slab bears on one uniform material. On clay we build the base up, hold joints toward the tight end of the 24 to 36 times thickness rule and cap them at 15 feet.

The problem here
Patios tied rigidly to a house on the east side are the most common failure we are called out to. The house sits on a designed foundation, the patio sits on raw clay, and the two move at different rates.
How we build for it
We isolate the patio from the structure rather than pouring hard against it, slope it a quarter inch per foot away from the house, and keep panels close to square so shrinkage has somewhere predictable to go.

The problem here
Foundation work in Round Rock splits the same way the geology does. West side jobs hit rock early and pier depth has to be reworked on the fly. East side jobs sit on soil that moves an inch or more between a wet spring and a drought summer.
How we build for it
We size and detail for the side of town you are on, keep grade falling five percent through the first ten feet, and keep the top of concrete eight inches above finished grade so the perimeter moisture stays even.

The problem here
The west side of Round Rock has the grade changes, and that is where retaining walls earn their keep. Walls that fail here almost always failed on drainage, not on the blocks.
How we build for it
We build the drainage first, weep detail and a free-draining backfill zone, then step footings into the limestone rather than trying to bridge across it.

The problem here
Stamped work is unforgiving of a hot pour, and Round Rock summers run at or above the 95 degree limit ACI puts on concrete at discharge for a third of the year.
How we build for it
We book stamped jobs for early morning starts through the summer, use an evaporation retarder on the surface, and keep the release and cure schedule tight so the pattern holds its colour.

The problem here
Paver drives on the east side settle where the bedding was laid straight onto clay, and on the west side they settle where they cross an old utility trench.
How we build for it
We compact and test the base rather than eyeballing it, treat trench lines as their own prep problem, and run a proper edge restraint so the field cannot creep.

Local Rules
Permits and Requirements in Round Rock
Every city on our list handles concrete work differently, and getting this wrong is the client’s problem, not the contractor’s. Here is what applies in Round Rock.
Who issues it
Round Rock is unusual: the driveway permit does not come from Building Inspection. Street cut and driveway permits are handled by the Transportation Department, and the residential fee is 50 dollars.
Driveway standards
The city sets a residential driveway at a minimum of 12 feet wide, 18 feet desirable and 25 feet maximum, with a curb return radius between 5 and 10 feet and at least 50 feet of clearance from an intersecting street.
Backfill in the right of way
Round Rock specifies backfill compacted to no less than 95 percent of maximum density under TxDOT Tex-114-E, verified by Tex-115-E. We build to that spec whether or not the job is in the right of way.
Drainage and flooding in Round Rock. Round Rock has one well documented drainage problem and it is worth knowing about if you live in it. The city reports that more than 80 homes and every roadway crossing Lake Creek in Greater Round Rock West are at flood risk, with repeated inundation going back to the 1980s. It is the largest damage centre in the Upper Brushy Creek district, and two earthen dams are being built to address it. If your property drains toward Lake Creek, flatwork slope and where the water goes next are not details.

Round Rock Concrete Questions, Answered
Yes. Round Rock requires a street cut and driveway permit for work that cuts, breaks or otherwise affects a public street. It comes from the Transportation Department rather than Building Inspection, and the residential fee is 50 dollars. We handle the application as part of the job.
The city sets a minimum of 12 feet for a single-family driveway, treats 18 feet as desirable and caps it at 25 feet. Curb return radius runs 5 to 10 feet, and the approach has to sit at least 50 feet from an intersecting street.
If you are east of I-35 you are almost certainly on Blackland clay, which opens cracks up to four inches wide during a dry summer and closes them again after rain. A repeating crack in the same line usually means joint spacing that is too wide for that soil, or a base that was never built to carry the movement.
Very. The Balcones Fault Zone runs through the city. West of I-35 is karst limestone with thin soil, so the work is rock excavation and getting uniform bearing. East of I-35 is deep expansive clay, so the work is managing seasonal movement. Two different jobs.
It depends on the season more than the calendar. Through June, July and August we start stamped and large flatwork pours early in the morning to stay under the 95 degree concrete temperature limit, which means fewer slots per day. Call 512-998-3199 and we will tell you honestly what the next real window looks like.
